Good to know.

I didn’t write this, but I’d like to share it:

“Self Esteem and How to be Happy with Yourself ” by Karl Perera

Are you happy with yourself – with who you are and what you are doing? If you want high self esteem this is very important. Here’s what you need to be happy with yourself:

a) Don’t compete with others. Life is not a race. Set your own standards and try to reach them, don’t be scared to fail and accept your own limitations. Competing with others will drain you and will take away your self esteem because there will always be someone better than you. Decide on your path and stick to it.

b) Understand yourself. Know your strengths and weaknesses. Use your skills and do your best. You will find satisfaction when you are doing what you are good at and when you accept your weaknesses. Chances are you will also be more successful this way. Try to improve yourself but don’t waste effort and time on those things which are not for you. Accept your best as good enough.

c) Focus on your achievements no matter how small. Try to achieve more but don’t tire yourself out on things which don’t truly matter to you. Focus on what is really important for you. When you know what you want to achieve then set goals (small steps) and reward yourself when you achieve each step. Nobody gets there in one giant leap it takes time and effort to achieve anything worth while.

d) Always try your best and you will be happy with yourself.

e) Be happy with your life as it is! Look for the things that are right and take satisfaction in those. Be thankful for all the good things you have been given. Try to improve your life yes but be realistic about where you are and where you want to go.

f) You can’t do it all. Don’t try to. The best you can do is to use your skills and abilities as best you can and trust that everything will work out. Life is short and we have to choose what we can achieve and how we want to live. Choose wisely but have faith in others and in anything you believe in.

g) If you have faith use it. Faith in God is very helpful to many of us. The Holy Spirit teaches us our importance as people but also reminds us we need help from above to achieve anything real. Always hold on to your beliefs and values and don’t betray them or you will hurt inside.

h) Finally enjoy your life for the gift it is. Experience and give love. Don’t drive yourself so hard you no longer enjoy life or see the goal you set yourself. First think about your health and allow yourself time to reflect and quieten down each day.

I hope you enjoyed this brief article – Karl Perera

Thanks for reading.

  2. Hi Lisa,

    I couldn’t agree more with the advice given in this article. I believe we all have our own “inner critic” – our own doubting voice that suddenly tells us not to bother with that goal, or that promotion, or new job, because we don’t feel good enough, or we think we’re not worthy of achieving it. The way we think becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy whether it is positive or negative.

  3. Hi Lisa,

    Thank you for your inspiration. Obviously, self-esteem is a very fragile thing, so easily knocked, especially during times of stress and worry. I agree with your point about being happy with what you already have and your tips for maintaining happiness.

    I think the poem, below, appropriately sums up your advice.

    Kindest

    Joanne

    Desiderata

    Go placidly amid the noise and the haste,
    and remember what peace there may be in silence.

    As far as possible, without surrender,
    be on good terms with all persons.
    Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
    and listen to others,
    even to the dull and the ignorant;
    they too have their story.
    Avoid loud and aggressive persons;
    they are vexatious to the spirit.

    If you compare yourself with others,
    you may become vain or bitter,
    for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
    Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
    Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
    it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

    Exercise caution in your business affairs,
    for the world is full of trickery.
    But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
    many persons strive for high ideals,
    and everywhere life is full of heroism.
    Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection.
    Neither be cynical about love,
    for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment,
    it is as perennial as the grass.

    Take kindly the counsel of the years,
    gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
    Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
    But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
    Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

    Beyond a wholesome discipline,
    be gentle with yourself.
    You are a child of the universe
    no less than the trees and the stars;
    you have a right to be here.
    And whether or not it is clear to you,
    no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

    Therefore be at peace with God,
    whatever you conceive Him to be.
    And whatever your labors and aspirations,
    in the noisy confusion of life,
    keep peace in your soul.

    With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
    it is still a beautiful world.
    Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

  5. Hi Lisa

    I am one of John Thornhills Master class students.
    Visiting your blog for the first time.

    The article by Karl is wonderful and touching, great starting point for getting back in touch with your self.

    I think sometimes people forget about their own achievements as they are so focused on trying to compete with others and their entire focus is all how can I get one up on somebody else.

    Wishing all the best for 2011.

    Regards

    Zahid
